What is AMUSE?

AMUSE is an All-Kerala Intercollegiate Music Band Competition hosted by St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth, Thrissur, and its Alumni Association. Designed as a vibrant platform for young musicians, AMUSE brings together talented college bands from across the state to celebrate creativity, performance, and musical excellence. The event also pays tribute to the legacy of Late Mr. John P. Varkey—renowned lyricist, guitarist, composer, and proud alumnus of St. Aloysius College—whose groundbreaking contributions continue to inspire new generations of artists.

Why AMUSE?

AMUSE was created to encourage musical expression, foster cultural exchange, and support the next generation of artists in Kerala. It serves as a meeting ground where emerging musicians can showcase their talent, learn from one another, and perform before esteemed professionals in the industry. By honouring the legacy of John P. Varkey—whose work blended rock, folk, and classical influences—the event aims to nurture originality, experimentation, and musical innovation among young performers.

In Memory of John P. Varkey

John P. Varkey was a visionary musician, guitarist, composer, and songwriter known for his experimental style that fused rock with Indian classical and folk elements. A proud alumnus of St. Aloysius College, he continued to influence the Indian music scene through his groundbreaking work in Malayalam cinema and the independent music circuit. From his pioneering albums with Jigsaw Puzzle to the iconic formation of AVIAL, and from his global training at Trinity College of Music, London, to scoring films like Frozen, Kammattipadam, and Eeda, his creations left a lasting mark on contemporary music.
